Conformity Flashcards
Name the 3 types of conformity, in order of increasing depth.
compliance, identification, internalisation
Define compliance
The lowest level of conformity. A person changes their public behaviour but not their private beliefs. Usually a short-term change and often the result of normative social influence
Define identification
When an individual changes their public views to match those of a group, because they value the group and wish to be part of it- internalised opinion stays unchanged.
Define internalisation
When an individual changes their public and private views or behaviour to match those of a group- the group has genuinely changed the person’s mind. Change is long lasting and exists outside of a group setting.
What is NSI?
Normative social influence; when a person conforms in order to be liked. They do this because it is socially rewarding and/or to avoid social rejection
What is ISI?
Informational social influence; conforming to what others do or say because we consider them to be a reliable source of info- typically in an ambiguous or unclear situation.
