Procedure

A

-p’s arrived at Yale, allocated teacher role, or confederate (learner), slip of paper was rigged was always the teacher
-taken to adjoining room and learner was strapped to an electric chair
-p’s (teacher) received a sample shock (45 volts)
-task- p’s read series of words pairs to learner, learner has to say which word was originally paired wrong answer=shock
- voltage increased by 15 volts each time
- up to 450 volts and then the XXX switch
-learner gave no response up to 300V
- At 300V the learner pounded on the wall and then stops answering
-p’s told to treat no answer as wrong
-ponding repeats at 315V then not heard from

-p’s interviewed after, measures taken to ensure they left in the same condition
- most showed nervousness (sweat, tremble)
