Milgram Original & Variation Evaluation LT2 Flashcards
What would having strong controls, standardised procedures e.g the confederates were scripted and being able to replicate mean?
The study was high in reliability (methodology).
Strength or weakness?
Why were cause and effect conclusions reached? (Methodology)
- There were strong controls.
- Bias was avoided.
E.g. each pp had the same experience.
Why were there positive applications/contributions to society? (General)
Milgram showed how easy it is to follow a destructive/dangerous route through obedience.
Can be avoided in the future. For example, police/army can be trained not to blindly obey orders for illegal acts.
Explains why children obey parents.
What supporting evidence is there?
What type of strength is this?
Hoflings study of obedience in nurses USA.
General.
Why was there low ecological validity?
What type of weakness is this?
As was at Yale was an artificial setting. Pps felt protected from harm e.g. The experimenter said they would take responsibility.
The experiment might not reflect real life.
Can not be generalised as May not behave the same outside of experiment.
Why were the experiments unethical?
The pps suffered psychological harm e.g. cried and begged.
Pps deceived.
Didn’t have the full right to withdraw: felt pressure to continue from experimenter.
However, when debriefed 84% said we’re glad to take part.
Why was there low population validity?
What type of weakness is this?
American males used only: difficult to generalise.
ethnocentric/androcentric.
However, Milgram did same experiment on women and was the same results.
Why is there low experimental validity? Methodological.
Pps may not believe the reality of the experiment.
They felt protected as was at Yale which seen as trustworthy.
However high experimental validity as was believable (Pps met learner before hand, visible signs of distress).
