Milestones Flashcards
What do the Barlow manoeuvre and Ortolani manoeuvre test for
Developmental dysplasia of the hip
Barlow = addicting the hip joint by moving legs inwards towards the midline and pushing down, thus posteriorly dislocating a hip which is dysplastic
Ortolani = abducting hip joint by pushing legs outwards and up - thus reducing hip dislocation (if present)
Who is more likely to get developmental hip dysplasia
Females
Firstborns
Breech presentations
What is developmental hip dysplasia (DDH)
Abnormality of the hip joint where the ball of the femur and acetabulum of the pelvis do not articulate properly during development, meaning that the joint can easily dislocate and will continue to develop abnormally
Diagnosis of DDH
If clinically suspected then hip US
Mx of DDH
Mild = self - limiting
More severe = Pavlik harness or even surgery
What is the Moro reflex
When a baby is startled by a sound or movement
Why is it concerning that a 13months has a preferred hand
Hand dominance normally develops by 2 years and children <18 months old should not have a hand preference
This may indicate spastic hemiplegia or cerebral palsy
