milestone last term 9 Flashcards
Photosynthesis
A chemical reaction in which plants make their own food (glucose)
Using sunlight absorbed by chloroplasts
Endothermic – takes in energy from the surroundings
Uses of glucose
>Respiration – releasing energy • Converted into starch for storage • Produce fat or oil for storage • Produce cellulose cell walls • Produce amino acids for protein synthesis
Light increases photosynthesis because?
More energy for the
reaction
Carbon dioxide increases photosynthesis because?
More reactants (provided there is no limiting reactant)
Amount of chlorophyll increases photosynthesis because?
More energy for the
reaction
Temperature increases photosynthesis because?
Initially more energy but
then enzyme denatures (higher temperature = higher rate till it gets too hot)
Aerobic Respiration physical breathing
A chemical reaction in all living cells all of the time Releases energy – exothermic reaction Transfer energy for: • Chemical reactions • Movement • Warmth
Anaerobic
Respiring Without oxygen
Releases a lot less energy than aerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration in
muscle cells
glucose → lactic acid
Anaerobic respiration in
yeast cells
(fermentation)
glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide
Used to make bread and alcohol
Lactic acid
A chemical that when built up in
muscles causes fatigue
Metabolism
The sum of all the reactions in a cell or the
body
Includes: • Conversion of glucose to starch, glycogen and cellulose • Formation of lipids from glycerol and 3 fatty acids • Use of glucose and nitrates to make proteins (PLANTS) • Respiration • Breakdown of protein to form urea.
