leaves Flashcards
Stomata
Pores in the underside of the leaf that allow the passage of gases in and out of the leaf
Xylem
Tubes that transport water from the roots to the leaves and the rest of the plant
Phloem
Tubes that transport sugars produced in the leaves the during photosynthesis to the rest of the plant
Guard Cells
Specialised cells that prevent water loss by controlling when the stomata open and close
Chloroplasts
Organelle containing chlorophyll- the green pigment used to absorb light energy.
Air Spaces
Empty spaces in the leaf to allow the movement of gases for photosynthesis
Palisade Cells
Long thin cells that contain many chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
Epidermis
upper and lower
Protective layer of transparent cells that contain few or no chloroplasts at all.
Cuticle
Waxy outer covering that prevents water loss from the leaf.
Spongy
Mesophyll
Cells
Irregularly shaped cells that act as a temporary store for starch and sugars.
