Migration within the EU - Poland to the UK Flashcards
What does migration mean?
The movement of people from one place to another.
In 2004, what was the reason for lots of people migrating to the UK?
Poland and seven other Eastern European countries joined the EU. With poorer standards of living than in countries like the UK, it presented obvious opportunities.
What does ‘the source country’ mean?
The country in which a migrant has come from, e.g. Poland.
This is also known as the ‘country of origin’.
What is meant by ‘the host country’?
The country that the migrant goes to, e.g. UK.
Also known as the ‘country of destination’
Most migrants that come from Poland to the UK are called economic migrants, what does this mean?
When people chose to move for better jobs and higher wages.
Push factors are things that force people to leave their country, give some examples that would make someone want to leave Poland?
Not enough jobs, low wages, poor educational opportunities, poor healthcare, war with another country.
What are some examples of pull factors, things that attract people to a country?
Hope of finding a new job, higher wages than at home, lower level of crime, friends and family may have moved there already.
What problems can migration have on the country of origin?
A lack of skilled workers (BRAIN DRAIN EFFECT), house prices fall, less taxes are paid and the economy slows down.
What positive effects can migration out of a country have?
Lower unemployment mean young people find it easier to get a job, lower house prices mean first time buyers find it easier to get on the property ladder. A lack of skilled workers can lead to opportunities for other people to get trained up and get a better job.
What problems can migration have on the country of destination?
Overcrowding and lack of housing. Strain on education and healthcare resources. Friction between locals and immigrants. Cultures in other countries may be different and this can cause problems e.g. in Poland most people carry a knife.
Economic leaching when money is sent back to families in their country of origin.
How can people moving to the UK be beneficial?
Diversification of culture.
Fill gaps in employment - e.g. jobs that are unwanted by others.
More taxes paid.
