What is mass tourism?
Large numbers of tourists visit the same destination at once, often on a package holiday and with chartered transport provided.
Key facts about Jamaica…
One of the Caribbean’s main tourist destinations with 1.3 million visitors in 2001.
Tourism is the countries 2nd biggest income.
It gives 220,000 Jamaicans jobs.
Much to offer the tourist including: watersports, wildlife sanctuaries and golf.
What are the advantages of mass tourism?
More money is put into the local economy.
More jobs are given to locals.
Better infrastructure is created for tourists which also benefits the locals.
What are the disadvantages of mass tourism?
Noise pollution from tourists destroys the countryside.
House prices rise due to more people.
Overcrowding and congestion occurs, especially on the coasts.
The air quality is reduced.
Lots of litter is left.
Cruise ships and divers damage coral reef habitats, as does raw sewage leaked by boats.
Why do LEDC’s encourage tourism?
Large employers create 9% of the growth.
Alternative revenue stream.
Promotes trade between countries.
