Asylum Seekers
A refugee who has made a request for protection and residence in a host country and is awaiting a decision by the state where they made the request.
Colonialism
Gaining control of another countries politics and governance, for the benefit of the ruling state e.g through exploiting their natural resources
Economic theory
Governments will maximise economic efficiency, as productive workforce and a developed financial market, if they allow free movement of goods, capital and labour.
Embargoes
Limit or ban of trade between nations or participation within an IGO, often as a consequence of corruption or bad governance.
Environmental Migration
The movement of an individual or population due to natural hazards, drought, famine or sea level rise.
Failed State
A country in which the gov has lost control of one or more national functions, such as law and order, economy, or democratic recognition
Forced Migration
People are forced to flee from unsafe living conditions, persecution or conflict
International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) , and World Bank Group (WBG).
Both offer loans and temporary financial assistance to developing countries
What is the IMF and their aim?
A fund of 189 countries with the aim to aid each other to achieve financial stability or provide loans for development.
Nationalism
Identifying with and developing a sense of belonging to a nation through ties to cultural symbols such as a flag, sport, foods and drinks, and clothing
Net migration
The difference between inward migration and outward migration for one country
Pull factors
Reasons and perceptions to attract migrants to live in a place
Push factors
Reasons or perceptions that discourage migrants to live in a place
Refugee
The forced movement of an individual due to persecution, war or political unrest
Sovereignty
The rights of a country to have its own gov and run its own affairs within an internationally recognised territory
