What is migration?
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another with various intentions such as settling temporarily or permanently
Voluntary Migration
When a person chooses to migrate.
Forced Migration
When a person feels like they have no option but to move and their life may be threatened if they do not.
(War, Government Persecution, Natural Disaster)
Refugee
Unable or unwilling to return to country of origin due to well founded fear of persecution.
Complexity of Refugee Definition
-Subjectivity of the definition means some candidates are dismissed
-Doesn’t legally include victims of natural disasters
Asylum Seeker
Someone seeking protection from persecution but has not been legally recognised as a refugee.
Forbidden from Employment.
Asylum Claims result in:

Right to Remain (legal status as a refugee)

Deportation
Internal Migration
When a person moves within a country and does not cross any state boundaries.
External Migration
When a person crosses a boundary out of their state.
Immigrant
After international migration, you become an immigrant to your new country.
Emigrant
After international migration, you are an emigrant to your home country.
Motives for migration
-Economic
-Family
-Education
-Conflict
-Environment
Push Factors
Operate from the place of origin.
They encourage the migrant to leave
Pull Factors
Operate from the destination.
They encourage the migrant to move to a place
Remittance
Movement of funds from a country of work back to a migrant’s home country
Level of Migration is down to two key factors:
-Willingness of countries to accept migration
-The accessibility of a country
Irregular Migrant
PC term for illegal migrant
Exploitation of irregular migrants
They lack bargaining power to get better wages and conditions - they still prefer it to source country
