migration Flashcards
what are the positives of migration?
- migrants bring new cultures and foods. they set up businesses and help the economy. these businesses also employ people.
- international university students pay more then English students to attend university, helping to fund it.
- international migrants often take on the low paid jobs that British people don’t want (e.g. caring/nursing)
what are the negatives of migration?
- 85% of migrants say their reason for coming to the UK is economic (earn money, send it home. doesn’t help the UK economy).
- migrants have access to our services, such as schooling, nursing and health. increases waiting times, and councils have to somehow find the money to fund this.
- migrants may take job opportunities away from people born in Southampton.
describe the difference between national and international migration:
national migration: people migrating to Southampton from other parts of the UK.
international migration: people migrating to Southampton from other countries.
describe the international migration in Southampton:
- international migration in Southampton is almost double the UK average.
- 20% of Southampton residents were born abroad.
- approximately 8000 people come from eastern Europe.
- 28% of Southampton university students are international.
- tends to attract young migrants, meaning they will have children and increase the rates of natural increase.
what are the pull factors for national migration to Southampton?
- jobs/finding work.
- better shops, services, entertainment.
- cheaper or better housing.
- 2 universities to choose from and study at.
- over 36,000 students at the two universities. 20% of the population is aged 15-24.
why might some people like or dislike migration?
like:
- recruiting care home staff is difficult. reliant on migrants who work for very low wages.
- migration helps UK economy. more taxes means more money spent on hospitals and schools.
- skilled doctors and nurses from abroad means the NHS can operate.
- UK has ageing population - more old than young. need young migrants to fill jobs as we don’t have enough workers.
dislike:
- growing population means more houses are built on greenfield sites - destroys habitats.
- getting a place for children in schools and doctors appointments is very difficult.
- a lot more competition for jobs.
- wages decrease because migrants work for such low wages.
- 14,000 people on council waiting list - migrants seem to take priority, and British people are sort of pushed aside.
