Transnational identity
Bhatti’s study
study of British Asian identity.
It found that there were often tensions between the 1st and 2nd generation migrants when it came to tolerance of issues like divorce and careerism.
They did however have a hybrid identity between the two cultures, their family’s and their country’s.
Bhatti’s theory links to the theory of the…
Transnational identity. - Eriksen
Qureshi reported that…
Black British Asian families, notably those in the Pakistani community, have become gradually more accepting of issue which in countries like England, have become less taboo.
Berthoud’s study of…
Black-British families.
They were typically with a lower rate of marriage, with more independence expected of their women.
What was Berthoud’s explanation for their findings
That the trends visible in Black-Caribbean-British families are likely to due to the stronger presence of matriarchal traditions in Caribbean culture, the echo of which whether recognised or not, is there.
Moynihan in the 1950s noted
a higher proportion of single mother households in Black families.
Main issue with Moynihan’s study?
It’s clearly outdated because it’s from the 1950s but the racialisation of single parent households being because of some moral question, continues to be racialised today despite the lower proportion of Black families being as poor.
Extended families are more common amongst which minority groups?
South-East Asian.
Likely because of the stronger expectation of collectivism and the care of the elder generations.
Boomerang family means what?
Families where the children of the parents return to their household because of their difficulty settling down.
The frequency of these has greatly increased in recent years because recent generations have not enjoyed the access to the ‘property ladder’.
Boomerang children might also be a cultural issue.
what example could you use to demonstrate this?
Italian families.
It is very common and actually praised within Italy for (especially sons) to not get married but rather stay home and care for their parents, supporting them with their earnings.
Rapoport’s theory of family diversity could be kept in mind why?
Because just like the majority ethnicity, minorities can also formulate the households based off factors other than culture.
This should be observed to avoid the pitfalls of cultural theories, especially cultural deprivation theories.
