What is migration?
Its the natural movement of people from one place to another, usually involving a change in address
What is an EMIGRANT?
An emigrant is someone who leaves a place (e for exit)
What is an IMMIGRANT?
Immigrants are people who arrive in a place (I for in)
Why would someone choose to migrate?
They may choose to migrate for better employment chances / better job opportunities
Why would someone be forced to migrate
Someone may be forced to leave home due to war or famine, these people are known as refugees
What is a PUSH factor for migration? What pushes people away from their home?
- High crime
- Crop failure
- drought
- flooding
- poverty
- war
What is a PULL factor for migration? What pulls people from their home?
- higher employment chances
- more wealth
- better services
- good climate
- safer/less crime
- more fertile land
- lower risk of natural hazards (eg earthquakes, landslide etc.)
What is the impact of migration in the place people migrate from?
Advantages
- more jobs will be available as less are looking for a job
- money is sent back - strengthening the economy
Disadvantages
- there would be fewer young people as they have all migrated, this will effect population growth
- it can lead to a skills shortage (eg bricklayers, joiners etc)
What do people have to do once they’ve migrated?
- find a job
- learn the country’s language
- make friends
Sometimes people will feel excluded due to a language barrier and experience racism
What are the types of migration?
International
Temporary
Internal
Rural to urban
Forced migration
What is international migration?
Movement from one country to another
What is temporary migration?
When people move to work for a particular length of time before returning home.
(They will generally send their money home to their families)
What is internal migration?
When people move to a different area of the same country.
What is rural to urban migration?
Movement from the countryside to a town or city
What is forced migration?
When people have to leave their country for a certain reason (eg war)
