What are the features of migraine?
A
Moderate or severe pain in head with pulsating quality. May be accompanied by:
- Visual aura
- Transient hemianopic disturbance
- Spreading scintillating scotoma (25% of cases)
- Nausea and vomiting

What is first line management of migraine?
A
Oral triptan + NSAID or paracetamol
Consider nasal triptan in young people

Is migraine unilateral or bilateral?
A
Can be either. Bilateral is more common in children.

What effect can migraine have on daily life?
A
May cause avoidance of routine activities

What can be triggers for migraine?
A
- Caffeine, chocolate, cheese
- Disturbed sleep pattern
- Certain medicines
- Menstrual-related
- Stress or excitment
- Depression
- Shift work
- Poor posture
- Hypoglycaemia
- Alcohol
- Delayed, skipped or missed meals
- Bright lights
- Smoking
- Flickering screens
- Loud noises

What is first-line prophylaxis for migraine?
A
Topiramate (teratogenic) or propranolol
Propranolol preferred for women of child-bearing age
