What is GBS?
A
A demyelinating ascending polyneuropathy

What classically precedes GBS?
A
Campylobacter jejuni infection
Can get from consuming undercooked poultry

What are the signs and symptoms of GBS?
A
- Bilateral ascending weakness
- Reduced reflexes
- Peripheral loss of sensation
Weakness may progress to cranial and facial nerves

How is GBS diagnosed?
A
- Nerve conduction studies - reduced conduction
- Lumbar puncture - may show raised protein with no other abnormalities

How is GBS treated?
A
- IV immunoglobulins
- Plasma exchange
- VTE prophylaxis
- Supportive care
