Midterms Physiology Lab Flashcards
The gel-like substance surrounding the nucleus and filling the cell
Cytoplasm
A membrane-bound cell organelle that contains digestive enzymes
Lysosome
Main function is to act as a barrier that separates the contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm
Nuclear membrane
Main function is to produce cilia during interphase and the aster and the spindle during cell division
centrosome
Main functions are the synthesis of lipids, steroid hormones, the detoxification of harmful metabolic byproducts and the storage and metabolism of calcium ions within the cell
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
a structural layer surrounding the cell
Cell membrane
Membrane-bound organelles that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reaction
Mitochondria
A mechanical stress absorber and an integrating device for the entire cytoskeleton
Intermediate filament
Controls and regulates the activities of the cell (e.g. growth and metabolism) and carries the genes, structures that contain hereditary information
Nucleus
Prepares protein and packages them for export to other parts of the body
Golgi Apparatus
Primary function is to produce and assemble the cell’s ribosomes
Nucleolus
Function is to handle waste products, take in and get rid of waste products
Forming vacuole
Its function is to produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
The site of protein synthesis in the cell
Ribosomes
They serve as a storage pool for selected secretory products
Secretory granules
