Midterms Part 2 Flashcards
was mostly referred to as mass
transportation.
Urban Transportation
refers to an area with dense
population. It is ideal for a town or city with highly dense
population to have an optimal mass transport system in order
to cater the demand of movement of people, goods, and services but with less impact to environment and energy
consumption
Urban
Modes of Urban Transportation
Private Vehicles
Public Transport
Mass transport that is commonly used as per point-to-point long distance way of travel but lesser than a bus. It is a vehicle originally made in the Philippines after World War 2. It
can carry about 20 adult passengers.
Jeepneys
A standard vehicle for hire with driver. Methods of hiring
and negotiating services were significantly different from
country to country. This cab can cater a maximum of 4
passengers. Of all the public transport by land, this one can be
expensive.
Taxi
An urban transport that can be used in remote
or small areas. In some cities, it is used for travelling short
distances just within the downtown or city proper. It can be referred to as a taxi in a small scale that can carry about an average of 3 to 7 passengers.
Tricycle
Similar to tricycle but man-powered, quiet, and
environmentally friendly. It can only accommodate about 1 to
2 passenger/s depending on the capability of the driver.
Pedicab
A paratransit for medium capacity that can cater for
about 10 adult passengers. Its route can be fixed depending
on its franchise specification. In some areas, it can be an
optional public transport for jeepneys. Most of these types of vehicles are made of surplus cars from Japan and assembled
here in the Philippines.
Multicab
Lliterally a single motorcycle that is attached with
a wooden plank which serves as an additional seat for extra
passengers. This type of transport is typical to remote
mountainous areas in province. Its safety is highly
compromised since single motorcycle is intended only for 2 people.
Habal-habal
Common mass transit for larger capacity and longer
destination. Ideal for most buses to have a point-to-point
terminal in each designated towns for taking in. This mass
transit is intended for out-of-town route.
Buses
In some places, this type of vehicle is a
substitute to buses. More people prefer this once since it’s a lot
faster and handy to travel in longer distance. It can cater
about 9 to 12 adult passengers. The only issue on this transport
vehicle is the safety among its passengers since it has a rising
number of recorded accidents involving this vehicle.
Passenger SUV/Van
Only available in parts of Luzon as of now but
it is currently under proposal in Mindanao. This kind of transport
is much quicker and faster than highway transport. Also, fare is
much cheaper than riding a taxi or bus. It can cater a large
volume of passenger than a bus. It only stops on point-to-point
station.
Metro Rail Transit
Since Philippines is made of islands,
one of the most essential mass transits is either by air or water.
Passenger planes are faster than traveling by land and water,
but more expensive. Sometimes it suffers traffic congestion due
to the unavailability of landing spot.
Airplane Passenger Plane
Waterway transport can be a good mass
transit without considering time. Most parts of Visayas region
uses this mass transport. There are a lot of varieties of a
waterway transport.
Passenger Ship/Ferry
Impacts of Urban Transportation
Traffic Congestion
Air Pollution
Noise Pollution
Excessive Energy Consumption
when not properly planned or when there is lack of
transportation management and policies. A transport system
must have order and must be regulated. If not, everyone will
do as they please and it results to lack of discipline and
lawlessness.
Traffic Congestion
Transportation is one of the most sources of carbon emission in
the world. Authorities are now regulating the registered
vehicles according to its air quality emission.
Air Pollution
Transport authorities are trying their best to reduce the effect of noise pollution made by some vehicles specially motorcycles. The use of modified exhaust is now prohibited in streets and blowing of horns were limited is some institutional areas like
church, schools, etc. Unnecessary sound systems are also prohibited in some public transport.
Noise Pollution
Urban transportation varies accordingly to the number of
populations present in the metro. Due to higher supply
demands in urban transport, volume of vehicles may flood the
highways that will result to an increase of energy supply
consumption such as oil or fuel.
Excessive Energy Consumption
involves the evaluation and
selection of highway or transit facilities to serve present and
future land uses.
Urban Transportation Planning
Two separate urban transportation planning time horizons
Short Term (1 to 3-year Period)
Long Term (over 20-year Period)
projects involve programs such as adding new
highway elements, additional bus lines or freeway lanes, rapid
transit systems and extensions, or access roads to airports or
shopping malls. Therefore, it focuses on providing transport
facilities or infrastructure.
Long term
projects involve programs such as traffic signal
timing to improve flow, car, and van pooling to reduce
congestion, park-and-ride fringe parking lots to increase transit
ridership, and transit improvements. Therefore, it focuses more
on providing traffic management.
