Atheist
A person who denies the existence of God
Conscience
A practical judgement of reason that helps a person decide the goodness or sinfulness of an action or attitude. It is the subjective norm of morality we must form properly and then follow.
Covenant
A binding and solemn agreement between human beings or between God and people, holding each to a particular course of action.
Deposit of Faith
The heritage of faith contained in Sacred Scripture and Tradition, handed down in the Church from the time of the Apostles, from which the Magisterium draws all that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Glossary)
Divine Revelation
The way God communicates knowledge of himself to humankind, a self-communication realized by his actions and words over time, most fully by his sending as his divine Son, Jesus Christ.
Magisterium
The official teaching authority of the Church. The Lord bestowed the right and power to teach in his name on Peter and the Apostles and their successors.
monotheistic
Religions that believe there is only one God. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are three great monotheistic world religions.
polytheistic
Religions that believe in the existence of many gods and goddesses.
religion
The relationship between God and humans that results in a body of beliefs and a set of practices: creed, cult, and code. Religion expresses itself in worship and service to God and by extension to al people and all creation.
secularism
An indifference to religion and a belief that religion should be excluded from civil affairs and public education.

Sacred Scripture
The written record of Divine Revelation found in the books of the Old Testament and the New Testament.
Sacred Tradition
The living transmission of the Church’s gospel message found in the Church’s teaching, life, and worship. It is faithfully preserved, handed down, and interpreted by the Church’s Magisterium.
Salvation History
The story of God’s saving action in human history.
Explain our inner longing for God.
Our natural will is to have God, and the good will of God is to have us, and we may never cease willing or longing for Him until we have Him in the fullness of joy. Christ will never have his full bliss in us until we have out full bliss in Him.
Literal Sense
The literal sense is the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and is discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound interpretation.
Spiritual Sense
looks to the deeper meaning of various scripture passages as part of God’s overall plan of Salvation
exegesis
The process used by scholars to discover the meaning of the biblical text.
Vulgate
St. Jerome’s fifth-century Latin translation of the Bible into the common language of the people of his day.
Dead Sea Scrolls
Discovered n 1947 in caves near the Dead Sea, these manuscripts belonged to the Jewish Essenesect, which lived in a monastery at Qumran. The scrolls contain Essene religious documents, commentaries on certain Hebrew Scriptures, and ancient Old Testament manuscripts. They have proved very valuable to scholars in studying the Old Testament and for learning about some Jewish practices at the time of Jesus.
Church Father
A traditional title given to theologian of the first eight centuries whose teachings made a lasting mark on the Church.

an extended comparison where many elements of a story stand for deeper realities like abstract ideas, moral qualities, or spiritual realities.
