Q

What was the “corrupt bargain” and how did it impact the election of 1824?

A

There was a corrupt bargain in the election of 1824 due to many factors. Like every other presidential election, the person with the majority vote becomes president. This was not the case in the election of 1824. John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were so close in votes that neither one of them won the majority vote. Due to this, the decision goes to the House of Representatives. This is where it starts to get corrupt due to Henry Clay being the Speaker of the House and also participating in the election. With this decision, Henry Clay was very biased and choose John Adams to be the president in return for Henry Clay becoming the Secretary of States.
