Midterm Review Flashcards
What is energy?
energy is the capacity to do work. In physics work can be described as exerting a force over a certain distance like lifting an obejt over your head. but if i were to lift the objest over my head and not move no work would be done but the amount of energy i have or potenial would still be the same.
What is a wh (Watt Hour)
One watt of electrical power, maintained for one hour, equals one watt-hour of energy.
A thousand watts for one hour is the same as one watt for a thousand hours.
What is power?
Is the rate of producing or consuming energy. How fast you can get get the work done. even though one watt over a thousand hours has the same amount of energy in a kilowatt the kilowatt is the same amount of energy in less time.
Comparison between truck power and energy.
You could move a loaded semi-trailer across the country with a lawnmower engine if you didn’t care how long it took. Other things being equal, the tiny engine would do the same amount of work as the truck’s big one. And it would produce the same amount of energy and burn the same amount of fuel. But the bigger engine has more power, so it can get the job done faster.
Energy = what
power*time
Power=what
energy/time
First law of thermodynamics?
energy can neither be created or destroyed.
What is electricity and energy fuel mix?
The mix of fuels used to generate the electricity in homes, factories, and businesses
What is an energy audit?
an assessment of the energy needs and efficiency of a building or buildings.
what is fracking?
tapping or drilling into the earth and forcing water and sand into the well at high pressures in order to create microfractures in rock held open by sand.
per capita emmisions
emissions created by the energy use of an individual person, usually pertaining to a specific country or region of the world.
Historical emissions
calculations of the amount of emissions produces by either the world or specific regions of the world over a given amount of time.
What is 745,000,000KWh as a metric prefix and why?
it is 745 GWh because one kilowatt hour is one thousand watts and that needs to be multiplied by one thousand in order to get the amount of power. you cant double up on terms.
