Midterm Part II Flashcards
Types of Goals
TRIP
T - Topic - What do we want?
R - Relational - Who are we to each other?
I - Identity - Who am I in this interaction?
P - Process - What communication process will be used?
Goals change over time
Prospective Goals - Before conflict
Transactive Goals - During conflict
Retrospective Goals - After conflict
William Bennoit Image Restoration - 4 Strategies
1 - Denial
2 - Evading Responsibility
3 - Reducing Offensiveness
4 - Accountability
William Bennoit Image Restoration - 2 Denial Strategies
1 - Simple denial
2 - Shift the blame
William Bennoit Image Restoration - 4 Evading Responsibility Strategies
1 - Provocation - scapegoating, reaction to someone else
2 - Defeasibility - Didn’t know/have enough info
3 - Accident - not my fault
4 - Good intention - thought it would help
William Bennoit Image Restoration - 6 Reducing Offensiveness Strategies
1 - Bolstering - Highlight good to decrease bad
2 - Minimization - It wasn’t that bad
3 - Differentiation - not as bad as another act
4 - Transcendence - Place act in different context
5 - Attack the accuser - Attack accusers credibility
6 - Compensation - pay for them to go away
William Bennoit Image Restoration - 2 Accountability Strategies
1 - Corrective Actions - Restore to the original state
2 - Mortification - Admit guilt, ask for forgiveness, repair damage
Name the 4 Power Currencies
RICE
R - Resource - Ability to control resources. Often results from obtaining a specific position.
I - Interpersonal Linkages - Ability to network or bridge what you have to other people and things.
C - Communication Skills - Charisma, persuasive speech, bones through love, caring, nurturing, empathic listening.
E - Expertise - Special skills or knowledge in particular area.
Types of Power
1 - Designated (title/role)
2 - Distributive (one or the other have the power/either or)
3 - Integrative (working together) power
Relational Theory of Power
Power you have over someone = the dependence they have on you
Techniques to balance power
High Power
- Restraint
- Empowerment of low-power people
Low Power
- Focus on interdependence
- Calm Persistence
- Stay actively engaged
Rahim’s 5 main conflict styles
1 - Competing - high self, low others
2 - Collaborating - high self, high others
3 - Compromising - middle self and others
4 - Avoiding - low self and others
5 - Accommodating - low self, high others
Principle of Error
Know what you should use and mess up, don’t use it.
Rhetorical Sensitivity
Ability to use the right conflict style.
Threats, Warnings, Recommendations, Promises
Threat - negative sanction, source controls
Warning - negative sanction, source does NOT control
Promise - Positive sanction, source controls
Recommendation - Positive, source does NOT control
Verbal Aggression/Verbal Abuse/Bullying
not part of the conflict styles. Inappropriate behavior
Systems Analysis of Conflict (3 parts)
1 - Wholeness - the whole system
2 - Organization - the pieces, Coalitions and Triangles
3 - Patterning - interaction rules, microevents
Microevents
Observable, recurring patterns of behavior that can be analyzed for underlying conflict structure.
Coalitions
Forms when some are closer to each other than they are to others. A private bond emerges. For example, in a family, you may be the “outsider,” the last to hear of important family events. At work, there may be two groups, those who like the supervisor and those who do not.
Triangles
I go to someone else to help with another person. Arrows are friends, circles is an isolate.
Interaction Rules
The underlying communication structure of the interaction. Underlying rules are like the structure of a language. Usually, no one person dictates the rules. Instead, the rules guide behavior in more subtle ways.
Know what conflict style to use and actually use it.
Rhetorical sensitivity
Know what conflict style to use and DONT
Principle of Error
My power over you=your dependence on me
