Midterm Lab Practicum Flashcards
Define direct transmission
occurs through close physical contact between persons and when fine droplets are sprayed directly on a person during sneezing, coughing, or speaking; STI’s common cold, flu, staph, and measles are examples
Define indirect transmission
involves an intermediary inanimate object that is divided into famine, parenteral, and vehicle transmission
Define fomite transmission
transmission from touching a contaminated utensil, toy, clothing, door knob, etc
Define parenteral transmission
transmission from deeply piercing the skin or tissue such as needles and broken glass
Define vehicle transmission
transmission from a non-living material such as air, water, soil and food that carries the infectious agent from the infected host to a second, susceptible host
Define foodborne illness
illness such as food poisoning usually occur due to improper and/or unsanitary handling of food during or after processing
Define waterborne illness
illnesses caused by bacteria that can survive in water for a long time; cholera, e coli, giardiasis primarily originate from fecal contaminated water
Define airborne transmission
infectious agents can be on fine dust or moisture particles that can travel a long way and stay in the air for longer than droplets; fungal spores
Define vectors
vehicle transmission of infection is through vectors, living organisms that carry pathogens from one host to another. primarily insects and other things like ticks, mosquitos, fleas, biting flies
What are the 3 categories of surface growth and their definition
- ring: a thin rim of growth which may adhere to the inside of the glass tube
- pellicle: a thick growth of the organism extending across the surface of the liquid
- flocculant: floating adherent masses
What are the 3 categories of subsurface growth and their definitions
1.) turbid: cloudy
2.) granular: small particles
3.) flocculant: small floating masses
What are the 3 categories of transparency
1.) opaque
2.) transparent(clear)
3.) translucent(partially transparent)
What are the 7 categories of consistency
1.) smooth
2.) mucoid(sticky)
3.) creamy
4.) granular
5.) dry
6.) dull
7.) shiny
What are the 2 categories for shape
1.) round
2.) irregular
What are the 5 categories for elevation
1.) flat
2.) raised
3.) convex(rounded out)
4.) umbonate(colony with raise center: fried egg colony)
5.) umbilicate: colony with a depressed center
