Alternate Attendance (sankin kotai)
Time Period: Edo Time Period (1603-1868)
Purpose: It was used by the government of Japan to insure political control by the regime over the daimyo.
Why was it important?: Daimyo had to divide their time between capital of their domain and the shogun’s capital city of Edo. This created the government to have greater control of the daimyo so they wouldn’t rebel.

Purpose: They were large landowners and vassals of the shogun.
Why was it important?: The daimyo’s job was to serve the shogun, fight for him, and to be in charge of certain groups of samurai.

Time Period: 1638
Purpose: The danka system was a voluntary and long-term affiliation between Buddhist temples and households in use in Japan.
Why was it important? This was important because it kept track of the religions in certain areas. This also made it easier for them to control which religion people worship and it’s another way to make sure individuals don’t turn Christian.
sakoku (“closed country”)
Time Period: 1630’s-1850’s
Purpose: Relations and trade between other countries and Japan had been severely limited. During this time Japan was only accepting trade with the Dutch and they didn’t allow any other countries to go in because they kept trying to influence Christianity.
Why was it important?: It was important because Japan didn’t want Christianity to invade their nation. During 1853 Matthew C. Perry forced them to open trade with America.
National Learning (kokugaku)
Time Period: 1670-1850
Purpose: It was an academic movement that focused on Japanese philology and philosophy. It aimed to shift Japanese scholarship away from the study of Chinese, Confucian, and Buddhist texts and towards research into early Japanese classics.
Why was it important?: It was important because it inspired nationalism and it promoted the study of Japanese history and literature.

Purpose: This was when Japan gained more knowledge and information through the Dutch. This allowed Japan to keep abreast of Western technology and medicine.

Purpose: The Iwakura Mission was when a Japanese diplomatic voyage to the US and Europe. The traveler took a lot of notes with lots of descriptions so Japan can adopt anything they might deem useful.
Why was it important?: The expedition was to modernize the Japanese economy and culture along Western lines.

Time Period: 1873
Purpose: He was one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history and one of the three great noble who led the Meiji Restoration with the goal of overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate.
Why was it important?: This was important because he was the military leader of the Meiji restoration.
The imperial Rescript on Education

Purpose: It was when all schools were forced to teach traditional ideals of Confucianism to the students.
Why was it important?: The purpose of the rescript was to encourage students to devote themselves to their studies and to be upstanding citizens of Japan.

Purpose: This saying represented the traditional ideal for women. For example the woman was meant to raise the children and manage the household while the father was meant to be the main bread winner of the family.
Why was it important?: Ryosai Kenbo makes it hard for women to combine a career and a family.

Purpose: The peace preservation law banned the expression of any ideas deemed anti-capitalist or dangerous to the national essence.
Why was it important?: The Peace Preservation Law aimed to allow the Special Higher Police to more effectively suppress socialists and communists.
