Five most common causes of DKA?
Sepsis/infection, sickness, stress/surgery, skipping insulin, undiagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus
Treatment for DKA?
Treat cause, IV fluids, blood glucose hourly checks, blood glucose under 200, calcium gluconate, IV regular insulin (Humulin R or Novolin R).
Lab values found for DKA?
Blood glucose greater than 300, ketones and urine and blood, hyperkalemia, and metabolic acidosis
What diagnosis is classified by severe hypothyroidism with cause of stopping medication, untreated, hypothyroidism, or infection.
Myxedema
s/s of Myxedema?
Hypoxia, decreased cardiac output, decreased heart rate, decrease blood pressure, decreased level of consciousness, hypothyroidism, and decrease urine output
Tx for Myxedema?
Intubation, levothyroxine, and warming the patient to prevent severe hypothermia.
Thyrotoxicosis is defined by…
Severe hyperthyroidism
What are causes of thyrotoxicosis?
Infection, stress, DKA, and thyroidectomy.
Signs and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis?
Severe hypertension, chest pain, dysrhythmia, dyspnea, delirium, fever, nausea and vomiting.
Treatments for thyrotoxicosis?
Beta blockers, anti-antibiotics, and anti-thyroid.
