Absolutism
The acceptance of or belief in absolute principles in political, philosophical, ethical, or theological matters.
Checks and Balances
Counterbalancing influences by which a system is regulated, typically ensuring that political power is not fully concentrated into one branch/group/person.
Divine Right of Kings
Idea that kings get their status straight from God, rather than from their subjects. Started by Britain by the earlier Stuarts and is also associated with the absolutism of Louis XIV of France.
James I
King of Scotland (1567) King of England and Ireland (1603-Death)
Catherine the Great
Enlightened despot. Longest ruling female leader of Russia. Focused on her subjects, education, and culture
Frederick I
Referred to as “Soldier King”. Showed interest in the military; increased soldiers training and war record, but never started/joined wars without being provoked
Frederick II (The Great)
1740-1786. Won wars and expanded territories, making Prussia a stronger country overall
Peter the Great
1672-1725. Best known for reforms for the purpose of making Russia a greater nation
Louis XIV
Louis XIV, known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, was a monarch of the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1643 until his death.
Versailles
The Palace of Versailles, or simply Versailles, is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France. In French, it is known as the Château de Versailles. Frederick I used it to get powerful nobles on his side
