Louis XVI
King of France from 1774-1792. Was executed. Considered a tyrant, though he seemed to be loved in the beginning of him rule.
Marie Antoinette
Louis XVI’s wife. Found guilty of high treason as well and was executed.
Estates-General
the legislative body in France until 1789, representing the three estates of the realm (i.e., the clergy, the nobility, and the commons).
Third Estate
the French bourgeoisie and working class before the French Revolution. Common people.
Tennis Court Oath
Were locked out of a meeting of the estates general, working class. Took an oath never to separate until a written constitution had been established for France.
National Assembly
the elected legislature in France during the first part of the French Revolution, 1789–91.
Storming of the Bastille
The Bastille was attacked by an angry mob. The prison had become a symbol of monarchy and dictatorial rule, and the people were fed up.

It retained the monarchy, but sovereignty effectively resided in the Legislative Assembly
Constitutional Monarchy
form of government in which a king or queen acts as Head of State. The ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected Parliament, not with the Monarch.

a convention of a major political party, especially one that nominates a candidate for the presidency.
Radicalism
having extreme political or social views that are not shared by most people
San-Culottes
common people of the lower classes in late 18th century France, a great many of whom became radical and militant partisans of the French Revolution
Jacobins
Radicalist group. Most ruthless and radical. Very extreme political group. Basically rebels/tyrants
Girondins
French moderate republican party in power 1791–93
