Disability is something done to an individual as a function of society, not a trait of the person. Society disables people.
Person first language is associated with…
The rights based model of disability
Problems with labeling
Stigmas, stereotyping, spread phenomenon, negative self-fulfilling prophesies.
Relative isolation
A model of service delivery that segregates disabled people from “normal” people. Also know as the facilities based approach.
Benefits of relative isolation
Some people may chose relative isolation because of better specialized services for the individual.
Problems with relative isolation
Often poor education, limited opportunities for recreation, and overall little daily choice. It also reduces the opportunities for interacting with society, and can lead to a lack of respect and treatment as a patient.
