Midterm Flashcards
What is worldview?
Basic set of beliefs that guide actions
What are the four world Views?
Postpositivist, constructivist, transformative, pragmatic
postpositivist worldview
traditional form of research, holds true for quantitative research over qualitative research. AKA “scientific research.” philosophy in which causes determine effects or outcomes.
constructivist worldview
approach to qualitative research. philosophy in which people seek to understand the world in which they live and work.
transformative worldview
philosophy that research needs to be combined with politics and a political change agenda to confront social oppression.
pragmatic worldview
Uses many methods and views to tackle a research problem. focuses on research problem and question and uses all approaches available to understand the problem.
3 research methods
quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods
quantitative research
means for testing objective theories by examining the relationship among variables. variables can be measured, so numerical data can be analyzed using statistical procedures.
qualitative research
means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem.
mixed methods research
involves both qualitative and quantitative research.
types of research designs
quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods
quantitative research design
experimental designs, non-experimental designs, longitudinal designs
qualitative research designs
narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnographies, case study
mixed methods research design
convergent, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential, complex designs with embedded core designs
abstract
brief review of the literature that summarizes major elements of article
how to abstract studies
mention problem being addressed. state central focus of study, state info about population, sample, or subjects. review key results related to study. point out flaws in study.
elements of mixed methods intro chapter
the research problem, existing research on problem and its deficiencies. purpose of study and rationale for mixed methods approach. research questions and hypothesis
elements of literature review chapter
share results of other studies closely related to one being taken. relates study to ongoing dialogue in the literature. provides framework for importance of study, and benchmark for comparing results with other finding.
literature map
visual picture of groupings in the literature showing how study will position itself within larger body of research
dependent variables
dependent of the independent variable. should measure multiple dependent measures in studies.
independent variables
influence or affect the outcomes in studies. variables that are manipulated in an experiment.
mediating variables
stand between independent and dependent variables. transmit effect of independent variable on dependent variable. tested using statistical mediation analysis and provides quantitative assessment of how independent variable is effecting dependent variable.
moderating variables
predictor variables that affect strength of relationship between independent and dependent variables. act on or intersect independent variables, and affect dependent variables when in combo with independent variables
research hypothesis
prediction about a specific relationship between variables.
