Midterm 2 Clinical Trials Flashcards
What does SCORE stand for in the SCORE study? What did they evaluate? What were the general findings?
SCORE:
Standard of care vs COrticosteroid for REtinal Vein Occlusion
They evaluated corticosteroids vs standard of care in patients who had vein occlusions (both branched or central vein occlusion).
For Branched retinal vein occlusions, the standard of care is laser photocoagulation. So, Steroid vs Laser Photocoagulation. They found that vision/macular edema was better when treated with laser photocoagulation than the steroid but the steroid did help. The standard of care for BRVO is still laser photocoagulation.
For Central retinal vein occlusion, the standard of care was to monitor them at the time. So, Steroid vs. monitoring. They found that vision/macular edema was far superior when treated with the steroid (triamcinolone).
Just giving steroid is rare and not likely in today’s practice.
What does BRAVO stand for in the BRAVO study? What did they evaluate? What were the general findings?
BRAVO:
Branched Retinal Vein Occlusion (idk where A comes from)
They evaluated anti-VEGF treatment (ranibizumab/LUCENTIS) vs. placebo.
For branched retinal vein occlusions, ranibizumab/ Lucentis (anti-VEGF) was an effective treatment for BRVO. 1-3 anti-VEGF injections tend to be successful.
What does CRUISE stand for in the CRUISE study? What did they evaluate? What were the general findings?
CRUISE:
Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (idk what UISE stands for)
They evaluated anti-VEGF (ranizibumab/ LUCENTIS) vs placebo in patients with Central retinal vein occlusion
For central retinal vein occlusion, ranibizumab (LUCENTIS/ anti-VEGF) was effective for treatment of CRVO.
Anti-VEGF now becomes STANDARD of CARE for CENTRAL RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION
What are the 3 main clinical trials for treatment of Retinal Vein Occlusions? What did they test?
1) SCORE - standard of care vs. steroid (for both BRVO/CRVO)
2) BRAVO- Anti-VEGF vs placebo for BRVO
3) CRUISE- Anti-VEGF vs monitor(standard of care) for CRVO
