Midterm 2 Flashcards
Know Suggested Theological Theme of 1 Kings
The King’s Kingdom
Know the significance of the Tel Dan Stele
tells you that David existed – it was even written by a foreign power, not by Israel
Know what EXACTLY Solomon requested for from God and why that is important relative to Deuteronomy.
Solomon asked God for a listening heart (or an understanding mind).
This is important relative to Deuteronomy 30 because Solomon realizes that he and the people need to have circumcised hearts. Hearts after God’s heart. Only after their heart is circumcised will they turn back to God
Know and understand the glories of Solomon’s reign in light of being a potential new Adam, the Davidic covenant, and the Abrahamic covenant (blessings to the world).
Solomon is a potential new Adam – Israel is blessed with an abundance of food and there is dominion and peace, just like Adam. There is an overall connection with Eden
Davidic Covenant – Solomon has uniting power, the power of David
Abrahamic Covenant – Judah and Israel were said to be like the sand on the seashore, this was the promise made to Abraham. Also, the nations were blessing Israel, like the Queen of Sheba

reveals that Solomon got prideful
Know the nature of Solomon’s request in 1 Kings 8 and its connection with Deuteronomy 30
Solomon does not just pray for Israel, but he prays for the Gentiles because he knows that Israel is a kingdom of priests.
He also realizes that everyone sins and that is why things went so wrong and that they will eventually go into exile
He specifically requests that God would circumcise their hearts as it was said in Deut 30. This needs to be done in order for Israel to turn back to Him
Know the significance of the coming of the Queen of Sheba
The Queen of Sheba comes and blesses Israel.
She saw God’s hand of blessing on them and this was predicted to happen in the Abrahamic Covenant, that all nations would bless Israel.
Know who Jeroboam is and what he did
Jeroboam was a king in the northern kingdom
He comes from inside Israel and causes a split
He will afflict the seed of David
He worries that when people go down to the southern kingdom to worship, they might not come back, so he sets up false worship. People do it for its convinience
God rules by His _____
word
Know the significance of the prophet who got killed by a lion (and the whole story) in 1 Kings 13
A prophet of God disobeys the Word of the Lord to not stay in the place where he prophesied and not to eat or drink in that place. However, another deceives him saying that the word of the Lord has told him that the prophet should come and eat and drink there. Because of the prophet’s disobedience, a lion met him on the road and killed him.
What is ironic is that:
- the donkey is standing there, next to the lion and has not been killed or eaten
- The lion has not eaten the prophet
- And the lion doesn’t kill the people walking by watching this scene
This all shows the power and importance of obeying the Word of the Lord
Be closely familiar with the reign of Asa and Ahab. Link this with the issues of God being the only one having stability and power.
Asa trusts God and stability is upheld
he tries to become friends with Syria in order to prevent/make a sandwich. He didn’t trust God and so he dies
Ahab is a new paradigm of evil. He does more evil in the sight of the Lord than anyone before him. He tries to rebuild Jericho, dismissing the curse that God pronounced on anyone who tried this. Two of his sons die, but he doesn’t care and keeps going. Under his reign is the Elijah v. followers of Baal incident on Mount Carmel, shows God sovereign power over everything. Ahab is proven to be totally helpless and God totally powerful. Ben-Hadad goes to Ahab and Ahab gives him whatever he wants. When they end up fighting, Ben-Hadad and his men are drunk, says to take them alive while fighting, instead of what a normal person would do and kill them. Makes no sense and God grants a great victory
Ahab wants a vineyard, Jezebel gets it for him, but it turns out to be more nails in his coffin.
The final showdown is between Ahab and Micaiah. There is a battle between them and Today Ahab will die – go to battle, Jehoshaphat dresses like Ahab and Ahab like a nobody. The people kill Jehoshaphat and a random guy drew his bow and not looking where he was shooting and killed Ahab between the chain link in his armor in an artery by his heart. Nothing is random, Divine execution.
Each of these instances show that God will preserve those that obey Him and instantly destroy those who disobey Him.

Wasn’t even in the blood line, he was a puppet for Babylon and even failed at that
Know about the “time clock” of the sons of Jehu and why it is important
God made a deal and allowed Jehu’s first four sons to sit on the throne in stability over the northern kingdom
But once the fifth son came to power, the kingdom was done and destroyed
Shows God’s sovereign power over kings and kingdoms
Know the significance of 2 Kings 25:27-30 in the flow of the book
Even after both kingdoms are taken into exile, God does not forsake His promises
He preserves Jehoiachin
The king shows him favor and puts Jehoiachin on a throne above all other kings in exile
The Davidic line is still a kingly line, and the seed has been preserved
