What are the most abundant atoms that make up the human body?
O2, C, H, and N
What is the human body composed of from the most to least?
Water, Fat, Proteins, Minerals & Carbohydrates
What are Macronutrients and Micronutrients? What is the difference between them?
Macronutrients are nutrients the body needs large amounts of - they include Carbohydrates, proteins & fats
Micronutrients are required in relatively small amounts - they include vitamins & minerals
How can nutrients be classified? What is the difference between them?
They are 2 classes:
- Essential - must be obtained through the diet
- Non essential - provided by endogenous synthesis
What is used as a major source of fuel for the body? Where do they come from?
Carbohydrates
Come from starches & sugars - found in grains, vegetables, legumes & fruits but dairy products & meats do contain some/very little amounts of it
What is dietary fibre?
A carbohydrate that does not provide energy for the cells
