Midterm 1 Flashcards
Who are the key introspectionists?
Wundt, Tichener
Intuition blindness
Intuition blinds us to the actually very complicated problems that the mind solves
Introspection
Science of experience, observe thoughts, and basic elements of thought/cognitive processes
Behaviourism
Must have operational definition in terms of observable behaviour, and formulate laws about stimulus(environment) and response(behaviour)
Tolman’s mental map experiment
Rat chose new path based on where the reward was in mental map
Cognitivism
Science of mind, we have structured internal representation that process information like a computer, and can be studied through behaviour and mental representations
Information processing
Idea that cognition is like how information is passed through stages of sensory input, perceptual analysis, and output
Goal of perception
Infer structure of external world from information we get from our senses
Ambiguity
Different things can look the same; choose the most likely option
Variability
Same thing can look different, or different objects in the same category look different; use reliable cues such as invariants
Depth perception
Recover 3D structure of the world from 2D array of retina image
Stereograms
Produce depth perception by creating retinal disparity, make two eyes see slightly different things
Retinal size vs apparent size
Retinal size unreliable, apparent size tracks actual size
Feature detection theory
Objects are composed of features detected by lower level visual processing; doesn’t represent relationship between the features
Structural description theory
Feature + spatial relationships such as recognition by components theory (using invariant geons)
