MIDTERM 01 - Elements and Principles of Art Flashcards
6 elements of art
Line, Shape, Form, Color, Space, Texture
The basic block of a visual design; distance or path between two points
Line
4 types of line
Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, Curve
Quietness, relaxation, contemplation
Horizontal line
Pointed, balanced, forceful, and dynamic
Vertical line
Line of action
Diagonal line
Shows action, life, and energy
Curve line
A two-dimensional design that only has height and width
Shape
2 types of shape
Geometric, Organic
Ones that can be described using mathematical formulas
Geometric shape
Are irregular and uneven
Organic shape
Relates closely to line in both definition and effect; are three-dimentional
Form
2 types of form
Geometric, Organic
Are forms that are mathematical, precise, and can be named
Geometric form
Are those that are free flowing, curvy, sinewy, and are not symmetrical
Organic form
Is a crucial component of an image’s composition
Color
Refers to a specific color
Hue
Relationship of blacks to whites and grays
Value/key
Comprises the degree of purity of a hue
Intensity/chroma/saturation
Distance between or within shapes, forms, colors, and lines
Space
2 types of space
Positive, negative
Is an area occupied by an object or form
Positive space
Is an area that runs between objects
Negative space
The way something feels or the way it looks like it feels
Texture
7 principles of art
Pattern, contrast, balance, emphasis, harmony and unity, proportion/scale, movement
Repeating unit of space or form
Pattern
The part that is being repeated
Motif
Differences in a work of art (light or dark, rough or smooth, curved line and straight)
Contrast
Is the distribution of the visual weight of objects in a work of art, color, size, and texture
Balance
The focal point of art to attract a person’s attention
Emphasis
Is achieved if all the elements in a composition work together toward meaning
Harmony/Unity
The size of something compared to what is next to it
Proportion/scale
Visual element in a work of art that creates a sense of action or implied motion
Movement
