MIDI and Making Beats Flashcards
Name the eight groups of commands that can be sent/received by a MIDI device
1 Note on 2 Note off 3 Polyphonic key perssure 4 Control change 5 Program change 6 Monophonic Key (channel) pressure 7 Pitch bend 8 System Exclusive (usually global commands affecting the entire device)
Describe these settings in the Groove Pool: Base Quantise Timing Random Velocity
Base - the basic note value that the groove settings applies to
Quantise - applies quantisation in-line with the ‘Base’ value
Timing - how much/far the notes are being moved to match the groove file
Random - applies random timing fluctuations after Quantise and Timing have been applied
Velocity - if there is velocity information in the groove file then this setting applies it
Which feature allows you to adjust and automate the amount of groove being applied across all the places it has been used in your project simultaneously, and where is it located?
The Global Groove control - which appears in the Control Bar once Groove has been applied on an individual track
How can you use the timing of an audio or MIDI clip to create a new Groove file in the Groove Pool?
Right-click on an audio or MIDI clip and select ‘Extract Groove(s)’
Where are the two places you can access the Groove Pool from?
You can access the grove pool in the Clip View on an individual clip or at the bottom left above the Info View
Where are Abletons Groove files located?
In Packs - Core Library - Swing and Grooves (Live 10) or Browser - Catagories - Grooves (Live 11)
What are the three main uses of MIDI in Ableton?
MIDI Sequencing
MIDI Command
MIDI Files
In it’s default setting, which five types of MIDI information will be transmitted by an external controller keyboard when pressing a white/black key?
Note On, Note Off, Pitch bend, Polyphonic Key Pressure and Monophonic (channel) Key Pressure
Which parts of an external MIDI controller will usually transmit Control messages ?
Faders, Knobs, Sliders and Buttons
What are System Exclusive MIDI commands/messages ?
Global commands and settings that affect the whole device
What are Program Change MIDI messages used for ?
Used for changing between Banks of sounds on an external sound module or between individual sounds on a Plugin/Softsynth in the DAW
In MIDI, what is the difference between continuous messages and toggle on/off messages?
Continuous messages can scroll between all values from 0-127, whereas toggle on/off messages can on be set to 0 OR 127 at any given moment.
What happens when multiple pads are assigned to a choke group?
When any sound within that group is triggered, any others in that group will be silenced
What is the ‘Recieve’ dropdown selection used for in Drum Rack ?
To assign multiple sounds within the rack to be triggered by a single MIDI note (they then share a single pad in the rack)
What is the ‘Play’ dropdown selection used for in Drum Rack ?
To change which MIDI note (i.e. pitch) is being played when the sound is triggered - this is a way of tuning or transposing sounds to match each other within the rack.
