2-3 inches growth each year
Head size proportion to body decreases
Increase in limb growth
What is reaction time?
A psychomotor ability that allows the person to quickly move the arms and/or legs in response to a stimulus.
What is coincidence anticipation?
The ability to time a movement in response to another moving object.
What is the brain development occurring in middle childhood?
Frontal lobe continues to develop, increase in the right side of the brain. Corpus callosum fully myelinates which allows for connection between the left and right side of the brain
What near senses are vital in middle childhood?
Touch, taste, and movement
What far senses are vital in middle childhood and why are they important?
Vision and hearing. These are needed to function at school and in the community.
What happens with global and specific mental functions in middle childhood?
Ability to attend, self correct & redirect
Memory and metamemory
What is concept formation?
A child’s ability to put things in a group together
If you give them pictures of items, they can categorize them into groups
What is transivity?
Place things in succession/sequencing. Increase logical thinking
What is reversibility?
Able to construct and deconstruct things
Fold/unfold, put toy together and take it apart
What is seriation?
Putting things in an order based on one dimension (length or width for example)
What is classification?
Categorize objects based on criteria
Color, shape, heroes vs villains
What is conservation?
Understanding that different glasses with same amount of water look different
What is decentration?
Able to look at several features or relationships simultaneously
Ex: choice of glass (color vs size vs shape)
What is equivalency?
Looking at two objects, comparing them and determining if they are equal or not
