The time after the defeat of the Roman Empire
Demesne
The land that the king owned but let his followers farm it for him
Vassals
Were lords that had different titles such as count or earl
Knight
Was a loyal man to the king
Serf
Were peasants that farmed the kings land and could not leave the land
Freeman
Was like the serf but could leave the land and marry if he wanted
Manor
A manor was all the land that a lord owned
Title
Titles that were given to lords such as count or earl
Commons
Is were all the peasants animal grazed
Open field system
Was four fields one for animals and the others for farming
Fallow
Each year one of the fields was left bare so the soil could rest
Crop rotation
Were they left one field fallow to let the soil rest
Pottage
Vegetable soup with porridge
Bailiff
He looked after the lords land and kept law and order
Sanctuary
When a serf ran into a church he could not be arrested until he came
out of the church
Motte and bailey
They were the first type of castle built
Moat
Was a ditch around the castle filled with water
Keep
This was the main building in the castle were the lord and lady lived
Battlements
They were on top of the keep were soldiers kept watch day and night
Curtain wall
Were the outer walls of the castle
Turrets
Were strong towers along the castle
