Feudal system
The way the law was organised in the midevil/middle periods.
Middle/midevil Period
The period where there was a king and he ownened everything there was also castles in the midevil period.
Demesne
The Lord gave his land to his followers and kept a quarter of his land for himself.
Vassals
They were the titles that were given to the lords.
Knight
A man who fought battles and protected the Kings and the lords when needed.
Serf
Was a person that lived on the lords land and had to pay rent to the Lord they also worked for the Lord on his/her farms
They also had to ask permission from the lords to leave the land and to marry anyone.
Freedman
A person like a surf accept they were allowed to leave the lords land and marry without the lords permission.
Manor
Was the large house the lords and their surfs/freedmen worked/lived in.
Tithe
They paid the priest with one tenth of their crops.
Commons
All the peasant animals grazed together.
Open-field system
All animals would graze in the same field this would often cause rows.
Fallow
Nothing growing this ment the soil was rested.
Crop rotation
Each year one of the three fields was left fallow with nothing growing.
Pottage
Vegetable soup with pottage.
Bailiff
Person appointed by the Lord to take care of punishments.
Sanctuary
Where a peasant could run if they were being chased by a bailiff usually a church.
Motte and bailey
First tipe of castle in the midevil period/dark ages
Moat
A small river surrounding the castle
Keep
The main building in the castle
Battlements
Were on top of the castle walls
Curtain walls
Outer wall of the castle
Turrets
Were stronger thicker parts of the walls were people could look out
Drawbridge
A bridge that went over the motte
Portcullis
Iron grille lowered at the front of the castle entrance
Ramparts
On top of all the walls were people could look out
Latrines
Bathrooms at the corner of the tower
Ramparts
Ran along the top of the castle walls wide enough for a soldier to walk along
