Battlements
The battlements were at the top of the keep. All day long, soldiers kept guard on the battlements, watching for enemies.
Keep
The main building in the castle. It was where the Lord and his lady, their family and some soldiers lived. The windows were narrow slits which made it more difficult for their enemies to fire arrows into their castle.
Curtain walls
They were the outer walls of the castle
Turrets
Turrets were strong towers along the walls
Drawbridge
The drawbridge was raised at night or if an enemy approached
Portcullis
The portcullis was an iron grille that could be lowered infront of the castle gate
Ramparts
They ran along the top of the walls. They were wide enough for soldiers to walk on
Moat
The moat was the ditch around the castle walls filled with water. Often it was part of a nearby river or stream.
Courtyard/Bailey
Open space infront of the keep
Latrines
The toilets of the castle. Usually in the corner of one of the towers in the keep .
Motte
A small hill
Bailey
A big enclosure below the motte
Siege
Surrounding a castle and stopping people from going In or out
Battering ram
Used to pound open a gate
Catapult
Used to hurl huge boulders or fire balls at the castle walls
Ballista
A giant machine like a crossbow which was used to fire large arrows
Siege tower
U closed ladders on wheels
Solar
The room where the lady did her embroidery
Dungeon
Where soldiers captured in war were kept
Tapestry
Carpets with pictures
Trencher
Big slices of stale bread used as plates
Wimple
A headdress
Hawking
Where a hawk was trained to sit on a persons hand and hunt songbirds, ducks and small animals
Tournament
Where Knights acted out mock battles
Melée
The name for when Knights fought in teams
Jousting
When one knight fought against another
Dowry
Money or goods that a women’s family gave to her husband when they got married
Archer
People who shot arrows from cross bows or long bows
Squire
What happened when a boy turned 14
Page
When a 7 year old learned to ride a horse and use a sword
Dubbing
The ceremony of becoming a knight
Chivalry
A code of honour that said a knight could be brave, love God and protect women and children
