Physical Changes
A
- Hair thins and turns grey
- Skin’s moisture and turgor decreases, loss of subQ fat, wrinkling occurs
- Fat deposition increases (“love handles” and “saddle bags” appear)
- Body height decreases
- Decrease in energy and functional aerobic capacity
- Bone density and mass decrease
- Muscle tone decreases
- Some have OA, DJD, Osteopenia, Osteoporosis
- Functional capacity of all organ systems decreases
- Menopause
- Decrease in testosterone
- Leading COD in MA: heart disease, cancer, and accidents
- At greater risk for diseases known to be associated with genetics
- Presbyopia, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration may all develop
- Presbycusis

Cognitive Changes
A
- Capacity to perform intellectually stays constant
- Some decrease in reactiontime and cognitive flexibility
- Intellectual ability increase

Nutrition Metabolic Pattern
A
- Prevent obesity by appropriate food intake and exercise
- Monitor cholesterol
- M&W need adequate calcium and Vitamin D
- Monitor caffeine consumption
- Watch Na intake

A
Gradual decrease of tone in large intestine

Activity Exercise Pattern
A
- 30 minutes or more of brisk physical activity every day for a total of 3 to 4 hours per week
- Encourage muscle strengthening activities
- Focus on skill and coordination rather than speed and strength
- Caution in adults nearing 65 to prevent muscle strain or falls
- Avoid overexertion

Sleep Rest Pattern
A
- May not sleep as much do to life demands
- Insomnia a common finding
- Rest essential to allow restorative functions to occur
- Need regularly scheduled, high quality sleep and occassional napping when fatigued

- Unintended pregnancy still a problem
- Higher risk of maternal death and fetal complications
- Changes in reproductivesystem: arousal, orgasms, long refractory between erection and ejaculation, vaginal dryness, decreased libido

- If cannot cope well with stress, can impact health detrimentally
- When crisis managed successfully, Virtue of strength will evolve
- stressors include divorce of offspring, young adult children moving home, raising grandchildren
