What is the duration of Midazolam?
2-6 hours, dose dependent
What are indications for Versed?
- premedication for intubation, cardioversion, or other painful procedures
- seizures in children when other benzos are not effective
What are contraindications for Midazolam?
- hypersensitivity
- glaucoma (relative)
- shock
- coma
- ETOH intoxication (relative; may be used for ETOH withdrawal)
- depressed vital signs
- concomitant use of barbiturates, ETOH, narcotics, or other CNS depressants
What are adverse reactions of Versed?
- respiratory depression
- hiccups
- cough
- oversedation
- pain at injection site
- N/V
- headache
- blurred vision
- fluctuations in vital signs
- hypotension
- respiratory arrest
What are some drug interactions with Versed?
Sedative effect of Midazolam may be accentuated by use of barbiturates, ETOH, or narcotics
How is Midazolam supplied?
2-, 5-, 10-mL vials (1mg/mL)
1-, 2-, 10-mL vials (5mg/mL)
What is the dosage for Versed?
Sedation:
Adults: 1-2.5mg slow IV, may repeat in small increments (max dose 0.1mg/kg)
Elderly: 0.5mg slow IV (max dose 1.5mg in 2min period)
RSI:
0.1-0.3mg/kg IV/IO
max single dose of 10mg
What are some special considerations for Midazolam?
- pregnancy safety category D
- never administer as IV bolus
- continuously monitor the airway; have intubation and resuscitation equipment readily available
