What is the onset of Albuterol?
5-8 minutes after inhalation
What is the duration of Albuterol?
2-6 hours after inhalation
What are indications for Albuterol?
- relief of bronchospasm
- prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm
- anaphylaxis
- hyperkalemia
What are contraindications for Albuterol?
- prior hypersensitivity to Albuterol or Levalbuterol
- tachydysrhythmias
Adverse reactions for Albuterol?
- usually dose related
- restlessness, apprehension
- dizziness
- palpitations, tachycardia
- dysrhythmias
- tremors
What are some drug interactions with Albuterol?
- other sympathomimetics may exacerbate adverse cardiovascular effects
- MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate vasodilation
- Beta blockers may antagonize Albuterol
- Albuterol may potentiate diuretic-induced hypokalemia
How is Albuterol supplied?
Metered dose inhaler:
90 mcg/metered spray
Solution for aerosolization:
5mg/mL
2.5mg/mL
(in a 3mL dose/nebulizer)
What is the dosage for Albuterol?
Inhaler: 1-2 inhalations; up to 12 inhalations per day (wait 5 min in between)
Nebulizer: 2.5mg in 3mL NS, administer of 5-15min; up to 3-4 times per day
What are some special considerations for Albuterol?
- pregnancy safety category C
- Albuterol may precipitate angina and dysrhythmias
- use with caution in patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prostatic hypertrophy, seizures, or cardiovascular disorder
- in prehospital setting, Albuterol should only be given by inhalation
