Qu’ranic verses used as art to ornate shrine in competition with Christian churches

External opulent and rich mosaic is a sign of power and empire

Reappropriated columns from Roman temples

Later believed to be site of prophet’s ascension

Mosaics rebuilt by Sultan Suleyman after burnt down in 16th century

Muslims accepted the tri-significance of Jerusalem for the three religions. “There is no compulsion in religion” written to emphasise tolerance of Christianity and Judaism

Caligraphic verses on the external wall reference Mary and Jesus
