storing an exact copy of incoming info for a few seconds; the first stage of memory
What is short term memory?
holds small amounts of information briefly
What is long term memory? name the two types.
storing info relatively permanently
procedural- conditioned responses and learned skills
declarative- factual info- semantic (facts) and episodic (personal experiences)
What is state depending learning?
when memory retrieval is influenced by body state
What is interference in relation to memory and forgetting?
Tendency for new memories to impair retrieval of older memories, and vice versa
What kind of learning is best?
small consistent learning is better than cramming

What are the limitations to memory strategies?

What is the difference between content and process related problems in testing?
content- problem because of what is in the test
process- problem with how the test was made/ student late to take it
What are some general test taking strategies presented in class?
prepare well follow directions preview the test budget your time pace yourself answer easy questions first look for clues in other questions work strategically to answer all the questions
What is the fight or flight response and how does that affect test taking anxiety?
revs our body and mind in response to danger or stress
Fight or flight is also activated by stress, which testing creates
What are the three legs of the stool?
stress reduction, stress coping, and relaxing techniques
What are the states of Mind?
reasonable mind, wise mind, and emotional mind

What is the four basic type of communication?
aggressive- aims ot promote or advance the speaker’s aims at the expense of teh reciever’s~win/lose situation
passive- defers to the other, putting aside her or his thoughts or feelings: lost/lose. Speaker doesn’t communicate directly and openly
assertive- clear and open expression. Stating one’s thoughts and feelings and inviting other person to do the same
passive/aggressive- aims to convert control by hiding intentions and misleading the listener
What are some road blocks to effective communication?
blaming, changing subject, put downs, sarcasms, etc.
