light is
light is a form of energy that travels in waves
5 basic properties of light
- light travels in straight lines
- light can be reflected
- light bends travelling in different mediums
- light can be absorbed
- light is a form of energy
luminous vs non- luminous
lum. objects that emit light
non-lum. objects that do not emit light
natural light sources
light that naturally occurs
- bioluminescent
- sunlight
- lighting
- anything hot ( fire, lava, heated metal)
artificial light source
Man-made light
Incandescent - classic light blub, small wire that burns
Fluorescent- glass tube covered in phosphor is filled with mercury gas
Phosphorescent - stores light rays and emits the light after the UV has stopped ( glow in the dark)
LED- a semiconductor that emits light when electricity passes through it
light interactions
- absorbed
- reflected
- refracted
types of materials
transparent - clear, all light passes through it
translucent - blurry, allows some light to go through it
opaque - solid, allows no light to go through it
what is a ray diagram
a diagram that shows light bouncing off an object
incident ray
a ray approaching a surface
reflected ray
a ray that is reflected off a surface
normal
an imaginary line drawn perpendicular to the surface directed outwards from the point of incidence
angle of incidence
the angle from the incendent ray to the normal line
angle of reflections
the angle from the normal lin to the reflected ray
Euclid law
angle of incident = angle of reflection on a smooth surface
plane mirror
a flat mirror
concave mirror
curves inwards, can generate heat, image will be up side down the further back but right side up closer in, might appear larger
