What is self-leadership?
- not about “leading” or coaching

Define Self

- degree to which you like or

- who we would like to be

What are values and how do they impact leadership?
- what you place as most important
- material possessions, people, places, memories/experiences, goals
- understanding what you and other priotize is important for leadership

- decide within 7 seconds on whether you want to do something or not
What are some non-verbal cues that signify superiority?
- Sitting while others stand/Standing while others sit
- Leaning back in chairs
- Expansive gesturing
- talking in a louder voice & Interrupting others
What is a Power Stance?
- a stance you do that helps you feel powerful and build your confidence
- different for each individual
What are some tips for overcoming nervousness or the fear of public speaking?
1) practice and prepare
2) know your audience
3) let your personality shine through
- focus on message (tell stories, grab attention) & focus on delivery (eye contact, be aware of verbal tics)

Trait theories
- expands on great man theory
- adds traits like creative, adaptability, trustworthiness

- many followers have the same traits, but being a leader is more than having traits
Style theories
- known as “behavioral theories
- what leaders do rather than their qualities
- Myers briggs personality test (personality types based on perception and judgement)
- Lewin’s leadership styles (authoritarian, participative, delegative)
Situation/contingency theories
- leaders approach should be based on the situation
- HBSLT
Modern theories (Focus on Servant Leadership & Authentic Leadership)
- Servant Leadership Theory, Robert Greenleaf (goal of the leader is to serve)
- Authentic Leadership, Bill George (inclusive approach, focus on genuine relationships)
What is the HBSLT?
- demonstrates how there are different types of leadership that can all be beneficial
- based on style & followers maturity
What does competence and confidence have to do with this theory?
consider the followers developmental level including
- competence (ability/skill) & confidence (self-assurance)
What are the four leadership styles and describe them in HBSLT?
Supporting - part of the team, leave decisions up to employees (low directive/high supportive)
Coaching - open to ideas, charm and persuade (high directive and high supportive)
Delegating - provide little guidance, hands-off approach (low directive/low supportive)
Directing - make decisions, followers listen without question (high directive/low supportive)
What are your top two styles and how can they benefit you as a leader?
1) Supporting/Participating - Your team will full supported and not feel like you are not on their team, helps with encouragement/motivation, creates a team player environment
2) Directing/Telling - having a plan and sticking to it, keeping on top of everything and organized
When is it best to use the different styles?
Wedding planner example
Supporting - assisting bridal party/parents/couple
Coaching - helping with decisions for venues, food, schedule etc.
Delegating - turning over duties to assistant to focus on couple/important matters
Directing - leading staff and vendors on day of event
What are the benefits and purposes of DISC?
- a valid but not reliable test
- purpose to observe behavior and improve communication within the workplace
What are the four styles of DISC? With characteristics, value to the team and weaknesses
Dominance - assertive, problem solver/argumentative, oversteps authority
Influence - enthusiatic, creative/ popularity>results, inattentive to details
Conscientious - precise, fact-finder/ bound by methods, doesn’t communicate feelings
Steadiness - understanding, team player/sensitive to criticism, resists change
