taxonomic classification
All living things (organisms) are classified by the binomial system of nomenclature, the Linnaean system
species
a group of organisms where all members do or have the potential to breed with one another and produce fertile offspring
Species name given by: Genus species epithet
linean classification
hierachal levels of toxonomic classification, based upon evolutionary relaitonships, assuming relationships is genetic (DNA) structure
Toxonomic hierarchy
○ Class
○ Order

Physiognomic classification
groups plants upon similarities in the structure of life form
Ex similarities in branching, leaf shape, height, etc
physiognomic traits of trees
single woody stem
physiognomic traits of shrubs
have multiple stems branching frm ground
physiognomic trait of graminoids
- grasses, sedges, and rushes
- Have parallel venation
- Some graminoids can be arboreal (=height of trees)
physiognomic traits of forbs
have dendritic or webbed venation
physiognomic traits of herbs
Usually of shorter stature than trees
physiognomic traits of epiphytes
Plants that use other plants as supporting structures
Not rooted in the ground and they do not take nutrients or energy from the plants they grow on (not parasitic)
physiognomic traits of thallophyte
Lichens, mosses, liverworts etc
