Q

Ribbon mics

A

Actual ribbon inside with a thin coat of metal on it
Ribbons vibrate linearly
Magnetic field (powered by phantom) created by currents between two plates
The ribbon moving inside is what creates the signal, changing the electromagnetic field

Q

Condenser mics

A

Pick up vibrations in the diaphragm, creating a current in the metal plate - similar to the inside of a DI. The plate is called a capacitor.

Phantom power is required to operate condenser microphones because they have an active circuit. The membrane can only transport the sound through the external voltage

Q

Do Dynamic Mics need phantom power?

A

Dynamic mic does not need a magnetic field, where a condenser mic does
so dynamic mics do not need phantom power

Q

Proximity effect

A

The proximity effect in audio is an increase in bass or low frequency response when a sound source is close to a directional or cardioid microphone.
