Microscopic World 2 Flashcards
Electronegativity
A measure of the ability of an atom of the element to attract the bonding electrons in a covalent bond towards itself.
Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory (VSEPR Theory)
Electron pairs in the outermost shell of the central atom in a molecule will stay as far as possible to minimize electronic repulsions
Octet Rule
All atoms tend to achieve the stable electronic arrangement of a noble gas when they form chemical bonds.
Hydrogen Bond
The strong attractive force between a hydrogen atom attached to a highly electronegative atom and the lone pair on another electronegative atom.
Polar bond
A polar covalent bond is a covalent bond with one bonding atom having a stronger attraction for bonding electrons than the other bonding atom.
Crystal/crystalline solid
A solid material whose constituent atoms/molecules/ions are arranged in an orderly repeating pattern extending throughout the material
