Microscopes Flashcards
What is tied to advances in microscope technology?
Progress in cell biology
What is a simple light microscope?
A microscope with a single lens and a light that illuminates the sample
What is a compound light microscope?
A microscope with two lenses and uses light for the sample
What is an electron microscope?
A microscope that uses a beam of electrons to illuminate the sample; the image produced is called an elctromicrograph
What are the two types of electron microscopes?
- Transmission electron microscope (TEM)- produces a 2D image and magnifies 10,000 - 100,000x
- Scanning electron microscope (SEM)- produces a 3D image and magnifies up to 300,000x
What is a CLSM?
A confocal laser scanning microscope; an extra fancy electron microscope that examines samples one slice at a time
What is a STM?
A scanning tunnelling microscope; uses computers to produce a 3D image that can magnify over 1,000,000x
