Microscope Flashcards
Is an instrument that is used to magnify small objects.
Microscope
This is the process of enlarging something only in appearance, not in physical size:
Magnification
This is the fineness, sharpness and clarity of the produced image:
Resolution
What are the types of microscope?
Compound
Stereoscope
Confocal
Scanning Electron
Transmission Electron
A microscope that uses laser light, aided by scanning mirrors, and the image is seen on a digital computer screen for analyzing.
Confocal Microscope
A microscope that uses electron illumination, the image seen is 3 dimensional and the pictures are B&W. Has high magnification and high resolution.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
A microscope that is light illuminated, the image seen is 3 dimensional and is used for dissection. Has low magnification.
Stereoscope/Dissecting Microscope
A microscope that is electron illuminated, the image seen is 2 dimensional and thin slices of specimen are obtained. Has high magnification and high resolution.
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
A microscope that is light illuminated, the image seen is 2 dimensional and commonly used. Has high magnification but low resolution.
Compound Microscope
Is what we look through at the top of the microscope.
Eyepiece
What is the typical magnifying power of a standard eyepiece?
10x
These are the primary optical lenses on a microscope. It works together with the eyepiece to produce a magnified and clear image.
Objective Lenses
What is the magnification range of objective lenses?
4x-100x
This holds the objectives so that the different objectives can be conveniently selected.
Rotating Nosepiece
Is located on the arm of the microscope that moves the stage up and down to bring the specimen into focus.
